Hotel Cozumel Night Dive |
June 27, 2013 |
At the end of the day enough wasn't enough. I decided to go for a night dive. I wasn't sure if there was a dive actually happening that night so I wandered over to Dive Paradise to check it out. I was disappointed to find that there was no boat going out but I happened to overhear another group planning a dive from the dock. Pardoning my imposition, I asked if I could join their group for the evening. They were a friendly crew from Texas and immediately welcomed me to the dive.
It's an amazingly easy entry into the water from the dock at Hotel Cozumel. It's very much setup for divers and you can even giant stride right in. We entered at dusk just before sunset. That gave us a bit of light to get our bearings before it was completely dark. It was a rainy week so the backdrop is a bit grey.

It was a very shallow dive. My max depth wasn't even 20 feet and I only averaged 12 feet during the entire dive. The whole dive barely counted against my saturation time. It was more like a very very long safety stop.

Towards the end of the dive I found what I was looking for. The elusive octopus. His eyes were just poking above a rock as we shone our lights on him. As we approached he began to swim away. We followed and he paused on the ocean floor and attempted to confuse us with a quick colour change. After that he darted off far too quickly for us to follow.

Getting out of the water was just as easy as getting in. A dive ladder was provided at the dock and it was just a matter of slipping off my fins and heaving the rest of myself out of the ocean.
