The Lastingham Wreck

January 21, 2024

The Lastingham is a "wreck". There was a wreck there at one point but it has been smashed, scattered, and eroded to the point where it's difficult to find any pieces at all of the ship. I wasn't even sure I was going to bother pulling my GoPro out for this dive.

I didn't see any pieces so I set about my default scuba diving activity, looking for octopus. I was shining my light under every ledge, between rocks, and through every crevasse but not finding one. Then I looked to my left and there was an octopus nonchalantly sitting out in the open. Not really trying to hide but it certainly did blend into the background.

Octopus

We were calm around him and he wasn't threatened by us so he was just walking around.

Octopus

We must have spent almost 10 minutes with the octopus. He continued his walk and eventually started changing his shape and colour to match the rocks and reef.

Octopus

Eventually, we just left the octopus to his own devices.
