Baxter's Reef from the Shore |
February 23, 2024 |
Off to KaikÅura for a long weekend of diving with the fine folks from Dive HQ. We arrived in the afternoon of Friday so there was enough time for a shore dive on Baxter's Reef.
Shore Leading to Baxter's Reef
After walking in from the shore, we had a considerable surface swim to the descent point where we dropped a line from a surface marker buoy. The navigator for our dive built a small pile of rocks to eventually navigate our way back to.
Rocks
This side of Baxter's Reef wasn't too remarkable. Some flora and fauna.
Sponge
Wandering Anemone
School of Fish
I did get lucky after our turnaround point and saw an octopus.
Octopus
Unfortunately, my buddy was already ahead when I saw the octopus so I couldn't spend any time with it before having to get moving to join back up.
At the end of the dive, our navigator did manage to find her way back to the pile of rocks and our surface marker buoy!
