Island Bay

April 1, 2018

It was an absolutely beautiful day on the surface of Island Bay. The bay is just short drive from the Dive Wellington shop.

The previous day had seen a southerly blow in so visibility wasn't great but it was passable.

Being a marine reserve, the crayfish who make it their home are safe and sound from being hunted. We came across a nest of them tucked away in a small crevasse.

As we dove along, one particular blue code took an interest in us. It would swim just underneath or behind us. It must have followed us for a good 15-20 minutes. I think it was pretty used to seeing divers in the area.

The blue cod definitely wasn't shy. It seemed to be interested in my camera and some of the gear dangling from our BCDs.

After a 20 minute dive out and a 20 minute dive back we walked out of the water back into the sun.
